Editor's Note: With the 50th anniversary of Loggers Sports only 12 weeks away, The Chief will lead up to the event with a series of all things Logger Sports, past, present and future.

In 1957, while the USSR was launching the first satellite into space and Elvis Presley's career was taking off thanks to his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵhad a launching of its own that would prove to be a part of the town's culture for decades to come - Loggers Sports.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵDays and Logger Sports, and the event has come a long way since those early days."As the community has changed and things have come and gone out of fashion, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵDays has changed as well," said Corinne. Lonsdale, who has been part of the event's organizing committee for over 30 years, and has just completed a project detailing Loggers Sports' storied history.

"When Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵDays started out, as far as Loggers Sports goes, it was just a one day event," said Lonsdale.

That single day has grown to a five-day festival that will, run this year from Aug. 2 to Aug. 6. As organizers look to celebrate both the here and now as well as looking at the future of the event, they are turning to the past for inspiration.

The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵDays committee is encouraging residents to invite the world to the special event with a postage paid postcard available at the Adventure Centre.

And committee members are ensuring that everyone involved in past Loggers Sports events receive a special invitation.

"One thing we are doing this year is bringing back former competitors, former committee members, former sponsors, and having them all there for a reunion," said Lonsdale. "That reunion will make this event special in and of itself."

The reunion and postcards are not the only ways organizers are celebrating Loggers Sports history. Some weekend competitions that have long been forgotten will also be making a comeback.

"For instance years ago we used to have a beard growing contest as part of it," said Lonsdale "That might be something we look at bringing back this year."

Organizers may also bring back tug-o-wars and a truck rodeo, long running events at Loggers Sports. They are also considering bringing back a competition that wasn't around for very long but fits perfectly with Squamish's current image.

"I'm not sure if it's possible, but there was a triathlon as part of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵDays long before we were known as the outdoor recreation capital. They would run up the back of the Chief and then they'd bike, and then they'd go out to the spit."

While the World Class Open Loggers Sports Show will the highlight of the day on Sunday Aug. 5, the full schedule of events has yet to be finalized.
