The second lottery home this year is up for grabs right here in Squamish.

This time, it’s part of the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation annual Millionaire Lottery. The Lauren condo isn’t finished construction yet but will be nestled at #617-38103 Third Ave. It is part of a prize package that includes a sub-penthouse condo with a rooftop deck in Vancouver.

The lucky winner also receives over $30,000 in furnishings for the ӣƵcondo, a new BMW and $350,000 cash, according to a news release. The total prize show home package is valued at over $2.9 million.

Or the winner can accept $2.7 million in tax-free cash instead of taking the prize.

Tom Malpass of Macdonald Realty said they decided to hold back one of the last units at The Lauren for the lottery. The development sold 99 per cent of its units in one day when they were released in September.

“It’s a good example of how quickly ӣƵis growing,” he said.

The condo is a two-level loft unit with two bedrooms and a den boasting just over 1,000 square feet, he explained.

“It’s a pretty cool unit,” he added and is expected to be completed in March.

Malpass and his team’s first lottery property was at 1990 Dowad Drive in the new Skyridge development. The BC Children’s Hospital Dream Lottery closed last month. That winner chose the cash instead of the six-bedroom luxury home, he said.

The plan is to keep ӣƵin the lottery for the future. “We just think it’s the hottest market in B.C. right now,” he said. “It should be thought of as a place where a prize winner would want to live.”

Angela Chapman is the senior vice president of philanthropy at the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation and explained the lottery is province wide and ӣƵis an attractive destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

“After 22 years, the market around housing has changed,” she said. “In some ways, many people think that it’s the only way they’ll get a home.”

Money raised from ticket sales will go toward buying much-needed equipment for the hospitals, Chapman explained. To date, the lottery has raised over $50 million for the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation.

“VGH is a provincial resource that sees the most acute cases in healthcare,” she added, noting it is a teaching hospital that collects data. So, the money can be used to innovate in ways that the Ministry of Health funding cannot allow.

Earnings will fund ceiling lifts, research programs, new technologies and portable equipment that allows surgeons to perform CT scans of patients during surgery.

This year, the Early Bird draw is brand new and closes on Dec. 24. Two Early Bird winners in two draws will win a total of $250,000.

Ticket sales close Jan. 12. Purchase tickets online at www.millionairelottery.com or in-person at any London Drugs.
