A film worthy of praise

Slumdog Millionaire Director: Danny Boyle Cast: Irrfan Khan, Dev Patel, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail Length: 101 min Rated: PG 13

I may horribly shudder when thinking about the pathetic mockery that the Oscars have become, but I do so love Oscar season. It's times like this when nominated films get huge distribution, and that means we get to see a great film like this one that almost went straight to DVD.

Slumdog Millionaire is an absolute treat. I even hesitate to write this review because I knew nothing going in and enjoyed it immensely. But for those that don't mind a little more information, here's a rundown.

The story is wonderfully staged around an 18-year-old kid from the slums of Mumbai who's a contestant on Who wants to be a millionaire? (funny note: the grand prize is 20,000,000 rupees - USD$411,600.) Each question asked flows to a flashback and the story follows the adventures of a kid-without-a-chance and his brother. Here he has an assortment of violent slum related activities while chasing true love. Then at present day the police are torturing him because he's doing so well on the show he must be cheating. But it gets better because just when you can't believe you just watched a film set in India without a single wild dance number bang. The end credits roll with a delightful scene that is the cherry on this delicious cake.

Really, I think it would be very hard for someone not to like this film.

Last week Coraline, this week Slumdog Millionaire get while the getting is good my friends.
