Annual fundraiser attracts TV personalities

The Sea to Sky Community Services and Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵSavings presents the third annual Diamonds and Pearls fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 2 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company.

The MC will be our own Tamara Stanners, and well-known CBC and CTV broadcaster Vicki Gabereau will be on hand for the live auction. There will also be great entertainment, a silent auction, fabulous prizes and much more. Individual tickets are $75 or six for $400 and can be purchased by calling 604-892-5796.

The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵNation Shaker Church on Billy Road in Stawamus is busy preparing for the large number of RCMP officers who are cycling in the annual Cops for Cancer pediatric research fundraiser tomorrow (Sept. 25). Donna Billy said a dinner will be ready for them on their arrival at 5 p.m. and Native ceremonial dancers will greet the riders. Members of our community are also invited, and cash donations will be most welcome. The display of Native art in the silent auction includes carvings, arts and weaving items. An invitation is extended to everyone to attend the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵCommunity Foundation's annual grant presentation and donor appreciation night at the Adventure Centre with a wine and cheese reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 1). This year, the recipients are: Evan Lake Forest Education Society, North Shore Schizophrenia Society, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHistorical Society and the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵSenior Centre.

Those experiencing loss through death are invited to participate in a six-week bereavement support group that provides a safe, confidential, non-judgmental environment. The group will meet each Tuesday starting Sept. 28 to Nov. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sea to Sky Community Services at 38142 Second Avenue. This service is sponsored by the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHospice Society, and to register or for more information, please call Wendy at 604-848-5751 or www.squamishhospice.com.

St. John's Anglican Church on Diamond Road is holding a series of fundraising events to help complete a roof replacement project. The first one is a British-style pie and boot sale Oct. 9, at the Church. Watch their website, www.stjohnsquamish.ca, and local media for upcoming events.

The Strengthening Families Programs have parents and children attend together. It is for six to 10 year olds and their families each Tuesday until Dec. 7 and for 11 to 14 year olds and families starting Oct. 6 to Nov. 16. These programs offer life skills training and help teach families how to communicate more effectively including how to deal with bullying and being bullied. The sessions are held at Sea to Sky Community Services on Second Avenue. The sessions include a meal, daycare for preschoolers and transportation for those who require it. The WOW riders are going on a Granville Island ride on Monday (Sept. 27) and members are asked to meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. to carpool to Park Royal (weather permitting). Those wanting to ride from Second Beach can arrange to leave about 9:30 a.m. If it is raining on Monday the group will do a local ride starting from Canadian Tire at 10 a.m.

A Bear Aware community event is planned for tomorrow (Sept 25) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵAdventure Centre. Admission is free and there will be crafts, raffle, prizes, kids activities and more.

The cafeteria at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵSeniors' Centre is now open and serving delicious meals, sandwiches, soups and goodies each day Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Manager Greg and chef Charles are looking forward to meeting seniors at the monthly Soup and Sandwich day on Thursday (Sept. 30) at noon. Please purchase tickets in advance and the $9 cost includes the HST.

The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at Government and Ross Road at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 28) for a Whistler Valley Trail hike. Anyone wishing more information is asked to call Heather at 604-892-9003.

The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library's teen advisory committee will meet on Tuesday (Sept. 28) at 6:30 p.m. This is a chance to join other teens who want to talk about books and help make the library a cool place to hang out! The Evening Book Club at the Library will meet on Thursday (Sept. 30) from 7 to 8 p.m. to discuss the book Not Wanted on the Voyage by Timothy Findley.

The Tantalus Seniors' Walking Club will meet at the Adventure Centre on Thursday (Sept. 30) at 10 a.m. for a Logger's Creek walk to Brennan Park. For more information, please call Joyce at 604-898-5594.

Big Brothers Big Sisters are challenged to find matches especially for one nine year old boy who has been waiting for quite some time to be matched with a special Big Brother. Soon, seven (boys and girls) may be eligible for a match. Prospective participants are asked to meet with their special child once a week for two to four hours and commit to the relationship for one year. Please call 604-892-3125 for more information.

The Eldercollege French conversation class at Capilano University begins on Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon, and runs for eight weeks until Nov. 23. Winners in the Rotary 200 Club draw for September were: Norm Barr ($100), Grethe Dowad ($120), Jinder Bin ($130) and Ed Scott ($150).

A Leadership Training program for volunteers is underway at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵSeniors Centre, with funding from 'New Horizon for Seniors' Community Participation and Leadership Program. Training sessions available during the next few months include: cashier training, computers, fitness, leadership training, matter of balance, Foodsafe 1 and Foodsafe 2, allergy awareness and first aid.
