The District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵhas received a grant worth nearly $1 million to install a new project at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵAdventure Centre.

According to a news release sent out on May 23, the 17-year-old centre, currently under construction for other improvements, will receive $999,250 from the B.C. Destination Development Fund to install what’s being called the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Story Experience Enhancement Project.

“The project aims to engage visitors in cultural history and environment unique to our region while improving public awareness of the Indigenous traditions and experiences available throughout the Sea to Sky,” wrote District spokesperson, Rachel Boguski, in the news release.

The project will include:

  • A new entrance sign
  • An enclosed play area
  • Reconfigured entryway
  • Theatre upgrades
  • Picnic area
  • Two interpretive trails to highlight the traditional Sḵwx̱wú7mesh uses of the region

The upgrades are expected to be done in collaboration with Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵNation).

"The generous grant will have a transformative impact on the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵAdventure Centre. Through the enhancement of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Story Experience, we not only engage visitors in our unique cultural history and environment, but also support reconciliation, sustainability and inclusivity,” said Lesley Weeks, the executive director of Tourism Squamish, in the release.

The total project is estimated to be about $1,034,250 and the District will provide the difference.

This is the second large grant that has gone towards the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵAdventure Centre within the last several years, as the centre received about $700,000 in grant funding for the current renovation project in 2021.
